Our Priorities

Aaron’s Wish is committed to advancing meaningful improvements in military mental health through advocacy, collaboration, and evidence-based policy. These priorities were inspired by Aaron’s experiences and represent our commitment to helping ensure that future service members receive the care, support, and dignity they deserve.

  1. Timely Access to Mental Health Treatment

Every service member experiencing a mental health crisis should have timely access to the level of care they need, including residential treatment when clinically appropriate. Seeking help should never be delayed by unnecessary administrative barriers.

  2. Mental Health Support During Administrative and Disciplinary Proceedings

Mental health challenges and disciplinary concerns often occur together. We advocate for policies that ensure behavioral health needs are addressed alongside administrative actions so that treatment and accountability can exist together.

  3. Compassionate Leadership During Times of Crisis

Leaders play a critical role in recovery. Aaron’s Wish supports leadership practices that promote dignity, connection, compassion, and accountability while reducing isolation and unnecessary stigma for service members in crisis.

  4. High-Risk Service Member Safety and Support

Service members identified as high risk deserve coordinated care, consistent follow-up, and thoughtful safety planning. Protecting those most at risk requires collaboration between commanders, healthcare providers, and support systems.

  5. Transparency, Accountability, and Continuous Improvement

Every loss should be an opportunity to learn and improve. Aaron’s Wish supports independent oversight, transparency, and evidence-based improvements that strengthen military mental health systems and help prevent future tragedies.

Family Advocacy

Families are often among the first to recognize when a service member is struggling. Aaron’s Wish is committed to helping military families better understand warning signs, navigate mental health concerns, prepare questions, document concerns, and connect with appropriate resources and support.

Our Family Advocacy resources are designed to provide practical guidance while supporting informed communication with healthcare providers, military leadership, and other support systems.

Looking Ahead

Meaningful change requires collaboration. Aaron’s Wish is committed to working alongside military leaders, legislators, healthcare professionals, researchers, veterans, and military families to strengthen military mental health and improve outcomes for those who serve.

Together, we can ensure that seeking help is met with support - not barriers.
